The Prohibition of Slavery and Forced Labour . . .

Just a quick note to all of you who are being forced into working for your JSA + expenses, in places like Tesco stores, or risk having your benefits cut.

Under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) which the UK is a part of:

The main rights protected by Section1 ECHR, that are incorporated into English law, are listed in SCH 1 HRA (Human Rights Act) 1998. They are as follows:

(Number 3 on the list)

* The prohibition of slavery and forced labour.

The Forced Labour Convention No. 29 (1930) bears particular relevance, and defines forced labour as:

  • all work or service;
  • which is not voluntary;
  • and is exacted under the menace of a penalty.

Remember this, and quote it to your Job Centre the next time they tell you that you have no choice to do unpaid work, or your benefits will be stopped!
